Wake up call

Technology is not always available.  This is a blog of reflection versus introducing a new technology or cool tool that I found.  I had to take my husband to the hospital on Sunday morning at 2am, it made for a long couple of days until he was released this afternoon.  But it made me think, internet access was spotty at best when I was staying with him in his hospital room.  This is something that as an online instructor I have to consider and be allowing for.  Every term I get quit a few excuses and you never kow how many are accurate and how many are untruths to get a extension.  But with that in mind it is necessary to allow for student emergencies and ways to adapt technology and assignments for students.

It seems like it is something that does not have an easy solution so it is a matter of trust until you get burned.  But as those that embrace technology we need be able to be flexible for those that are without access at times.

  1. Well said. We rely on technology so much, but what happens when the power goes out? During a blackout, I don't care that I can't use my computer - though I might be bored out of my mind - I worry about how I'm going to cook. (Let's say I've thawed a piece of frozen bread over a candle in order to make a sandwich.)

  2. First let me offer my prayers for continued good health for your husband!

Second, I know of one possible solution for your access problem.
I subscribe to a service through Verizon and I have a small uniit that has USB plug that I pop into my laptop. And like your smartphone, it accesses the Internet through phone lines. So even if your power was out, if your computer is charged, you can have access to the Internet form just about anywhere.
It even comes with an extra cord to use in low service areas to boost connection speed.
It's not free, but you get the device free with a 2-year contract and there are two device plans available depending on your expected usage.
It's really a perfect add on for those who travel a great deal given that most hotels require a sur-charge for Internet access.
    I hope this wa helpful.
PS...you get a better deal (and experience) bu shopping for this device at Best Buy as their salespeople know all the different plans available and van make the best recommendation depending on your needs.
I hope you and your husband not stay well.
