Meaningful Assignments

Through my reader I found a article that really has an impact on teaching today and particularly in higher ed.  The article discusses the fundamental five.  Five things an assignment must have to make it the best learning experience for our students.

These were:
1) Purpose--What is the goal of the assignment
2) Efficency--Is the assignment given the best way to get this material taught?
3) Ownership--This is does that student have buy in to the assignment and process or are they jumping through hoops for a grade.
4) Competence-Is what we are asking them to do reasonable?
5) Aesthetic Appeal-Does it appear to be interesting or even, *gasp* fun?  Or is it some boring task.  How can we package the assignment to achieve the greatest good.

These are key factors that I think we should consider when creating assignment and projectg for our students.

  1. I like this list a lot. Thank you so much for posting it. I find that post-collegiate learning focuses on the first - purpose. The rest of the points are often missed. Lately I've been trying to push ownership or the WIIFM.
I am going to take this list as a challenge to myself over the next few weeks. Thanks!

  3. Sounds like an interesting article that gets to the heart of teaching and what it really means to "reach" a student.

  4. Good list! It is helpful and I think right on the money. I like that one that asks if it is aesthetically pleasant - fun. I mean really, we all see the regular syllabus style handouts and they are boring. Makes me just think its a giant list of to dos, which by the way I hate having hanging over my head. If it looks fun and interesting I would be more willing to buy into it!

  5. I really like your idea of giving a meaningful assignment. After all student learn from this project and assignment that are related to subject mattter. Last semester I was fortunate to take reframing organization class and we have to go different work place ( jail, rehab center, college, school) and understand how they function. It just give you a clear picture of how you try to relate what you are learning and how you are understanding the subject matter. By the way john you should take that class, its really fun and learn a lot.
